Hi everyone,

I’m in the midst of buying some books and DVDs for the daughters of a family friend. I’ve found some books, but I’m coming up short on ideas for TV shows (and movies). Do you have any recommendations for TV shows for girls ages 5, 9, and 13?

I want to get them to experience shows from different decades across different genres that are friendly to young girls and have female leads. I was thinking along the lines of shows like Madeline, Babysitters Club, and maybe Lizzie McGuire. Any recommendations would be great. Thanks in advance!

TV: Avatar the Last Airbender. The first season is good with a few missteps, and the second introduces one of my favorite female characters of all time.

Movies: I'm not generally a big Disney booster, but Moana was very good. I guess they've probably already seen it though lol

Get them into Studio Ghibli if they're not already, they tend to have well developed female protagonists.

For this age range I'd start with Kiki's Delivery Service or The Secret World of Arrietty.

Princess Mononoke is my favorite but it's long and has some disturbing graphics. I'd say the average 13 year old would enjoy it, 9 year olds would be a toss up, and most 5 year olds couldn't handle it.

Thank you for the recommendations! It seems like some of the Ghibli movies are on HBO Max too so I’ll let them know so they can check them out there

For TV shows:

  • The Wild Thornberrys

  • Kim Possible

  • That's So Raven (maybe for the teen)

Movies:

  • A Little Princess (1995)

  • The Secret Garden (there's a cartoon version and a live version (1993). I liked both as a kid, but I liked the live one more)

I don't know if today's youth can sit through black and white programs without special effects, etc. but the teenager might like a favorite of mine: Beverly Garland in "Decoy," a 1950s drama about a female police officer. The first-ever police show with a female lead. Plus you get to see NYC in 1957.

I'd recommend all women (who haven't seen it) watch an episode or two for free on imdb just because it was so groundbreaking.

Thank you for the recommendation! It looks like the full series is on Amazon Prime so I’ll give it a watch and let them know too. Thanks!

Some of them are on YouTube. I just watched the first episode. (I'd never heard of it before and it's interesting.)

Movies: Little Women, Alice in Wonderland, some Ghibli films, The Wizard of Oz, Return to Oz, Matilda, Bedknobs and broomsticks,

Tv shows: Daria, Pepper Ann, Hilda,

Thank you for the recommendations! I’ve heard about Hilda on Netflix and I’ve been meaning to check it out. I’ll pass along the info to them, thanks!

There's a big difference between 5 and 13 so I think it's unlikely you'll find something that both would enjoy. The only shows I can think of off the top of my head that would work across age groups are sitcoms like The Simpsons, or shows with male leads (Fullmetal Alchemist springs to mind!). Something with vampires is a safe bet for something a teen girl would enjoy, so I'd have to suggest Buffy for the eldest. But it depends on the kids; so far the suggestions in this thread are a long list of media I hated, growing up. :P If I were suggesting other stuff with female leads I thought young-me would enjoy, I'd say Cardcaptors and the She-Ra reboot. And anything involving a lot of fighting, superpowers, humour and dramatic costumes.

Thank you for the recommendations! Also, I should’ve specified but I meant shows that would be good for each individual age so it doesn’t necessarily have to apply to all of them across the ages of 5 to 13

Gilmore Girls, for the 13 year old! Very woman-centric, and the early loves-books-and-school Rory wouldn't be a bad role-model.

My shero as a girl was Buddy in the critically-acclaimed TV show FAMILY. Many of the issues tackled on the show are still relevant today.

For the 2 older girls- I loved As Told By Ginger when I was around that age. Main friend group is 3/4 female and it came out in 2000. Who can forget the little seal girl?

TV: Anne with an E (on Netflix).

Movies: A League of Their Own (1992, one of my all time favs), Wolfwalkers (2020), Queen of Katwe (2016)

Babysitters Club

I don't know if there's an older version, but the one on Netflix is pushing child transition. That would be one to avoid.

I haven’t watched the new one but the show from 1990 was pretty good. There wasn’t an virtue signaling but showed important topics in a way that wasn’t pandering or over the top. The BSC movie from ‘95 was a mess and I heard that the episode with the TIM from the new show spoiled the series for a lot of people so that’s a definite skip
