Did you ever find the gender roles on SpongeBob funny?
The one main female character was Sandy. Other than Sandy and Pearl the episodes were dominated by male characters. SpongeBob would take on the female roles running gags of him wearing dresses, carrying a purse, and wearing lipstick are in the first three seasons. There have been a handful of memes about it.
When SpongeBob and Patrick try to get the attention of superheroes Patric pretends to be a purse snatcher. SpongeBob is wearing a pink dress and holding a purse days " oh my this purse is do big and heavy" when Patrick snatched the purse he SpongeBob screams for help and says " Are you here to rescue me?". The superheros arrive and tell them they aren't fooling anyone and to stop wasting their time.
I know men who act like this. I have mentioned before on this site my boss would try to imitate a woman's voice or scream. He thinks all women talk and act in a sterotypical way. It makes some of the costumers uncomfortable especially the women. Whenever they act like that I think of this scene in SpongeBob.
In can you spare a dime after Squidward becomes homeless spongebob takes him in. The whole time Squidward is expecting to SpongeBob to take care of him. So SpongeBob is feeding him, giving back machines, bringing him his daily newspaper ect. Later he tells SpongeBob to out on his uniform which happens to be a french maid costume and high heels. SpongeBob eventually kicks him out the house after he refused to get a job. Can you spare a dime
Can you spare a dime This episode is how I think about when other women talk to me about being a good wife and taking care of their husbands needs.
There's even a episode where SpongeBob and Patrick raise a clam together. SpongeBob takes on the role of a stay at home dad but throughout the episode is wearing hair curlers and a nightgown. Patrick is the father figure and the two fight about not having a fair share of work in raising the clam until the clam grows up and flies away.
There was only one main female character: Sandy. Sandy had good character traits. Smart and adventurous. See the episode pre-hibernation where she has so many extreme hobbies. Her character is good for the audience.
Over all rewatching this series really made me feel like these episodes are relatable. In my upbringing I was taught when I get married I'm going to have to take care of my husband. Take care of my him, be submissive and that the husband has the last say over any decisions because he's the man.
